A few years ago I wrote a quirky set of pieces inspired by the truly crazy illustrations in a medieval psalter – witty, bizarre and surreal creations, not at all inhibited, it would seem, by the sacred texts with which they shared the page. I wrote six little pieces for a small ensemble which were premiered in Stockholm by Curious Chamber Players. It will be a great pleasure to hear them played again, this time by the superb contemporary music ensemble Sequitur in New York in April, in Symphony Space on Broadway, and to discuss them with Victoria Bond and other composers in a pre-concert discussion. (Why have I put a modern cartoon up here? Because the medieval pictures aren’t available online…)
Following their premiere performance of my String Quartet in Woodstock, NY, on July 27th, the Fitzwilliam String Quartet will perform Ancient Stone at Twilight in the New York Athletic Club, overlooking Central Park, in a concert at 6.00 on Monday July 28th. It should be a magical occasion.
